Walking The Line

Waist Not, Want Not
Hmmm, it seems that I've become better at gaining weight than losing it. So, expect to see my (slimming) ass (although it's really the waistline that needs work) walking more. I've devised a plan that in addition to working out more, I am going to see if I can get off Marta one stop (or more) away from my destination and walk the extra distance.

There's Lovin In My Oven!
Wow, I saw a commercial the other day for a new Pillsbury product, Pillsbury Perfect Portions Biscuits. W00t!

I LOVE biscuits. I can make biscuits, but then wind up eating far too many. While I'd prefer my biscuits over Pillsbury's, this is a good compromise for me.

Now Accepting Reservations For 2006
The observant of you will notice that I've already booked a concert for 2006. Alright, it's not that far away when you consider that December 1st is tomorrow.

Much like my prediction that the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show would sell out, I think this She Wants Revenge show will also sell out.

Speaking of CYHSH I heard from my friend Randy that NPR did a piece on them yesterday. Unfortunately, I heard his message this morning so I missed the piece. If anyone knows where I can get it, please let me know.

Is That A Video iPod In My Pocket Or Am I Happy To See You?
Perhaps both! Yes kiddies, my 60GB video iPod hath arrived! My entire music collection, podcasts, vidcasts, photos, all in my pocket. Oh my!

And for the Artsy Types in the crowd

"Another toy!" you say? Look, some of you find signficant others, take extravagent trips, get married, have kids, yadda, yadda, yadda. My inability to find love has afforded me to remain a child and continue to buy toys.

Psst Podcasts... Nobody Wants To Hear Commercials
I am getting frustrated at the number of podcasts that are starting to play commercials. I understand making podcasts costs money, and that people who are putting their hard work into making said podcasts want to get paid, but the reason that people hate commercial radio (and have adopted podcasts) is because they all sound the same and are blighted by commercials.

Unlike my beloved Dish Network DVR there is no concept of thirty-second skip in the podcast world either, so I am forced to listen to these annoying ads. Well, that will stop as of today, because I am going to stop listening to commercial-filled podcasts. I left the world of commercial radio behind, I can certainly do the same to podcasts.

Meet Me At The Graveyard
Eventhough I am as thick as a brick I will be attending the soft opening of the Graveyard Tavern in East Atlanta tonight. My little 'hood has suffered of late, so I want to celebrate an opening instead of mourn a closing.

Come share a beer with me tonight, won't you?

Thong, Not A Thong, Not A Thing

This was the name of a game mentioned on the latest Five Hundy By Midnight podcast. The name of this game just cracks me up! I think you can figure out the game from the name...

Oh Macy's Parade, Why Must You Now Suck?
I finally got around to watching my recording of this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I used to love watching the parade on tv, but like everything else the tv executives have completely fucked it up. It's way too commercial (a lot like trying to watch the World Series now) and has too many commercials (a lot like the rest of tv programming, but my PVR takes care of that). No even the presence of Hanna Storm (have I ever mentioned my love for Hannah, especially in her shorter-haired CNN days?) could get me to watch more than ten minutes before deleting the program from my hard drive.

There Is Trouble In The Land Of Meet The Hashers
We've been in a real funk lately. Last night I missed every sports question asked. Shit, one of the answers was my favorite basketball team, the NY Knicks, and I still didn't know the answer.

We gathered last night at Johnny's Pizza in Inman Park. Thankfully, the game had a substitute host who handled the game much better than the other guy. Unfortunately, we wagered it all on the final (sports) question and fell to the bottom of the barrel. Well, at least the food was good and cheap.

CD Pick Of The Week
I am going to play this game a little differently for a while, at least until there is something released that I feel is worth purchasing (hate The Darkness, INXS is no longer the real INXS and I have never been a Shakira listener).

Today I am going to recommend a CD that was released earlier in the year that you probably either never heard about, or didn't think it was worth a purchase.

Therefore, today I suggest you give Grandaddy's EP called "Excerpts from the Diary of Todd Zilla" a listen.

Even The Vegetarians Are Tired Of Eating Turkey

Hmm it doesn't feel like I had any time off. Yesterday I had to be lazy just because I was on the go Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

I Ain't Never Gonna Be A Redneck
"It looks like they have been whipped up into a frenzy." That was Mike's assessment of the rampid dancing, posturing and first pumping at Saturday night's Drive By Truckers show. I couldn't have agreed more.

I was astounded at the number of people who knew the lyrics to every song that was played. Seriously, hundreds of people are that knowledgeable about this band! I knew exactly one song that gets played on Sirius' channel 26 (you know, the channel that I reference about 90% of the time).

Tag And Release
Sunday is laundry day. Imagine my surprise when I unfurled the running tights that I wore on Thursday's half marathon only to find all of the tags still attached to it! That's right, I ran for over two hours and never realized that the tags (including that piece of cardboard that tells you all about the moisture-wicking features) were there. Crazy.

Even worse was that this was the second time in a week this sort of thing happened to me. Earlier last week I inadverently set off the alarms at Target because the pants I had purchased at Old Navy had a security chip sewed into the inside of one of the legs. I only noticed the chip later that afternoon when I was digging through my pocket for change.

I Had A Dream
Last night I had a dream that my NY Jets won a football game. As a diehard fan I was obligated to watch last night's game between the Jets and the Saints. However, the game quite literally put me to sleep, so the outcome of the game came to me in my sleep. Yes, I checked the score this morning and found out that it was really a dream because the Jets lost 21-19. Very sad.

On The Brighter Side Of Football
Anyone else see the ASSwhooping Florida applied to Florida State Saturday? W00t! It would have been nice for them to have done the same thing to South Carolina so that they would have won their half of the SEC, but victories over Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida State made for a half-decent season.

Bye Bye Mr. Miyagi
One of the sad bits of news I heard over the weekend was that Pat Morita died. Known by fans of 1980s movies as Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid series, I will also remember him in his roll of Arnold on Happy Days.

Wax on. Wax off.

Twas The Day After Thanksgiving

psst- the Apple Store is having a One-Day Sale (even online)

Marta N00bs Are So Precious
I love riding Marta with people who never have. They usually look like a deer in headlights when the try to figure out if the train arriving at Five Points is the one that they want. For some reason no one believed me when I tried to convince them that the North Springs train was a Men's train and that the Doraville one was the train for Ladies (Of course I would get on that train and act as a Marta Ambassador).

Why Did My Feet Fail Me Now?
Say what you will about my (lack of) training, but I almost had a fantastic run yesterday. Buoyed by the crazy amount of good looking runners (read "girls") I was tromping along at a great clip (for me)... until mile eleven. At the eleven-mile mark the arches of my feet were screaming bloody murder, forcing me to have to walk for a little while.

In the end I finished, not as quickly as I desired, but far from last as well. The beer I had packed for the end made the journey worth it...

And Then The Feasting Began
After crashing hard from the run and the beer consumed thereafter, I awoke to shower and go out to have a great Thanksgiving dinner. For the last five years my friends Stacey and Andy have invited me to their house for Thanksgiving dinner. These kids know how to serve up a Thanksgiving feast!

Oh, and remember those Thanksgiving Jones Sodas I blogged about here? Stacey and Andy also purchased a pack and we sampled them as apertifs. I thought that they were all rather disgusting...

Normally dinner is followed by my annual PS2 Madden ass-whooping (my ass gets whooped). Luckily for me this year dinner was followed by a dog walk and watching of Pirates of the Caribbean (mmmm Keira Knightly).

For as many years as I have been hashing there has also been a huge "Thanksgiving orphans" gathering which occurs out in Tucker. Each year I hope to rally late and make it over for a nightcap and dessert, but last night as in the past I was too tired to make an appearance.

Twas The Day Before Thanksgiving

Things For Which I Am Thankful: Part 3
Probably the thing I am most thankful for is the large number of friends I have. Without their friendship and support things in my life would be a lot different.

Beard On!
Arrr, I am returning to Brown(+grey) Beard the pirate! So friends, when you see me looking disheveled, fear not because I've not lost my job (as of today at least), and I may not be on a drinking bender.

At least having a beard can't dimish the regularity of getting dates.

My Last Trip To The Mall This Year...
Was taken via Marta no less!

I jumped off of Marta at Buckhead last night and walked to Lenox Mall. It was quite a fun experience, actually. For a second it was like I was living in a city that was not in love with the automobile. Unfortunately I didn't see anything I wanted (to buy, at least). However I did eat one of my standard dinners, chinese food out of a styrofoam box.

I used to love going to the mall and people (read "girl") watch. However, in the last decade or so this seems to depress me more than entertain me, so I have a habit of avoiding the mall during the Christmas buying season. Since I rarely have Christmas gifts to buy, this has never really been a hardship.

If You Are Looking For A Xbox360...
Good Luck!

In addition to checking at GameStop in the mall, I walked to Target and CompUSA at lunchtime yesterday. To be honest, I wasn't really looking for a Xbox360, but I figured that if I happened to stumble across one, I'd buy it. Ironically, my misfortune of not finding one helped me from spending a fortune.

More Marta Hopping
Today I'll be hopping off the train in order to pick up my half-marathon packet at Colony Square before heading over to George's bar for my tradition pre-Thanksgiving beer.

I am debating on whether to walk from Colony Square to the Highlands, and then in turn walk to my car after drinking. More than likely I'll walk back to the train station from Colony Square so that I don't have the long walk back to my car late at night.

And If You Are On The Roads...
Please be careful out there. As can be imagined, there will be many more cars on the road over the next few days (more cars on Atlanta's highways is almost not comprehensible to me). Prepare for longer commute times and remember to always look out for the other guy because he or she are probably not looking out for you.

And for those of you who are in countries which are not celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, have a great Thursday!

C Programmer In Need Of Stimulation

I need a project. I know how to program (C is my (rusty) speciality, but I can easily relearn C++ and wouldn't mind kicking the tires of PHP). No, I am not looking for a new job, but to rekindle a hobby with the interaction of nerds. [look, I've given up on finding a girlfriend/wife, so why shouldn't I promote my inner geek]

Things For Which I Am Thankful: Part 2
I am thankful that the phrase "buy new 60GB iPod is on my To-Do list for today." I am finally fed up with trying to figure out what music I want to carry with me, and with this new purchase I'll be able to carry it all (along with podcasts, video and photos). I just wish that my To-Do list also contained an entry for "Pick up new XBOX 360."

Things For Which I Am Sad: Part 1
Somebody (finally?) stole the push broom I keep in my carport. It saddens me that I have lock down or hide anything I want to keep (for the record other then the carjackking I have now had an umbrella taken from my front porch as well).

While the broom was standing in plain view next to my trash cans, it was in a darkenend carport so I wonder if someone saw it from the street, or had walked up to my door to check out my house as well. I am considering buying some security cameras. Sad indeed.

For All Yea Who Need To Buy Used CDs On Monday

Like A Tasty Pie Crust, I've Been Flaky

I hope I don't die typing this, I just drank some milk forgetting that I was supposed to wait two hours after ingesting my medication (I made it an hour and a half).

I have been a NetBank customer for sometime. Friday I called them to ask a question, but instead of calling their 888 number I accidentally transposed two numbers. Instead of NetBank I was alarmed to get a pornography hotline instead. I kid you not. Send me a private email if you are interested in trying this out for yourself...

Why Must We Keep Changing The Nickel?
I received two nickels in change today. One of the nickels was the new and improved(?) 2005 nickel.

Why do we keep changing our change? Has there been a rash of counterfeit nickels hitting the streets that I have not heard about?

To All Of You I Ignored The Weekend
Sorry, I needed to do some soul searching.

And One Way I Got Better This Weekend
On Saturday I made what could be my last trip to Masquerade. I went to see a band called Piebald (who put on the great show I had predicted), but what I got treated to was even better.

Did I talk to one of the many attractive, but waaaay to young girls? No.
Did I get free beer? No.

I saw the revival of heavy metal in the form of the band Valient Thorr. These guys were so fucking rockin' that I was inspired to buy their cd at the show. Even better, each member came on stage with a denim jacket with the sleeves cut off and their logo stitched on the back.

Oh, did I mention that they hail from the planet Venus?

I was just the spirit-lifting experience I needed (and I might have been the only one in the room old enough to remember the heyday of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden).

Grabbing My Nuts

Pecans, that is. In an effort to get free pecans as well as deprive squirrels of food I have been trawling my driveway for pecans lately. I love pecans and the fact that my propery contains a mature tree pleases me.

I Had A Dream, It Was An Awesome Dream
There is a small plot of land between I-20 and Memorial Drive on a street called Maynard Terrace that has had some construction activity occurring on it lately. (btw- this is not the first time someone has thought about developing that lot) Today as I drove by on my way to Marta I dreamed that the current builder was going to build a Waffle House on that space. Oh, that would make me so happy! Currently I have to drive to the one on Cheshire Bridge near I-85 to get a Waffle House fix. Sure, the Majestic works for me, but sometimes I'd much rather have Waffle House.

If I can't get a Waffle House fewer than four miles from my house soon then I say that the terrorists have won.

Will Somebody Buy The Kids A Belt?
One of the many fashion statements that I don't understand (oh, I am old) is the wearing of pants so baggy that they hang down and you have to walk like you are toting a load of shit. If I only saw this fashion statemtent rarely I'd assume the kid had lost a lot of weight and I would be happy for him; I know better.

I am sure that I did a lot of stupid things in my youth as well. I am glad that this sort of pant wearing was not one of them.

It's A Phone, Not A Walkie Talkie
I am puzzled by the people who feel it it necessary to move their cell phone to the front of their mouth in order to talk into it. Perhaps if they lowered their voice when talking it might make sense, but they never do! Why people? Why?

Might Be Taking the Me Out Of Meetup Tonight
Tonight is the monthly meetup of the Atlanta Bloggers Who Get Together To Drink (see a link to the site as well as last month's attendees over there --->). Tonight the meetup will occur at Limerick Junction in the Highlands. I "like" Limerick, but I don't "like-like" Limerick -- especially when that guy gets up and sings , making it impossible to hold a conversation (I know, that's why people go to Limerick).

With my current mood and my feelings about Limerick I am not sure that I am going to attend. We'll see, maybe I'll need a drink later and find my way there...

The Price Of Poker

Oh, I didn't lose; just the opposite. I won a few bucks last night. However, I did get home at 12:45am causing me to sleep later than normal, which in turn means that this is being published later than normal...

I Thought Marta Was Da Bomb
Today I took the Doraville train from Five Points to the Lindbergh. Normally, I'd let the Doraville train pass and wait for the North Springs train and ride it all the way to Dunwoody. Since I seemed to be the only one without a jacket (I missed the cold weather memo) I thought I should really be different today.

My experimentation almost really paid off when I saw a guy waiving his arm and the Marta police running toward him. The three men stopped at a cluster of luggage. They looked at the luggage for a minute, the non-police participant walked away, and the police took the luggage. For a second I thought (and maybe so did they) that Marta was having a bomb scare.

"Are" R.I.P
What did the word "are" do to people? Why do people feel that "is" should be used even when the subject is plural? I just don't understand.

Don't believe me? Listen to people and you will notice that they say things like "There's two ways of doing this."

Oh Yeah, I'm Livin' On A Prayer

The other day sitting in the Vortex in L5P somebody played a lot of Bon Jovi on the jukebox. I knew every song the person played. Yes, I am forty. Yes, I listened (and still own) much of the Bon Jovi catalog. Yes, I still like it.

On A Wing And A Prayer
Don't ask me why, but last night I was bound and determined to make my first attempt at cooking chicken wings. I think it is because I am tired of paying a lot of money for wings at restaurants. So determined was I that I skipped my usual Monday night activity, team trivia.

Much to my surprise, it is amazingly easy to do (as well as being a lot cheaper)! I may never pay for wings again. Along with the wings I served myself some french fried (fried in a different vessel) seasoned with Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning and some quality bleu cheese dressing.

You betch your ass I'll be doing this again in the future!

Marta Material
Oh thank you Marta for saving my blogging ass again! You provide me with so much material...

Seen on Marta (again): A woman clipping her nails in the train. Fucking Yuck! Again people, personal hygene such as this should be performed at home.

Seen at the Dunwoody Marta station: Imagine the flow of people getting off a long Marta train on their morning commute. Imagine this flow of people going down stairs which are cut into three section. Now imaging a woman stopping in the middle of the stairwell so that she can answer her cellphone. It boggles my mind how people can be so inconsiderate and/or clueless.

Live On CD!
Tis the season for releasing live cds I guess. If the new Wilco double-set has been released (there was talk that it was to be scrapped), then four out of today's seven new releases are live, or live-in-studio.

Of the new releases only the Wilco cd or the Bright Eyes cd interest me. However having said that, I am not a real fan of live cds so I will most likely pass on today's offerings.

Can I Borrow A Pen?

Apparently I don't have a pen in my car any longer. This became apparent when I went to sign a card that I was going to give my friends on Saturday night. They recieved a blank card; and cash (thankfully I hadn't planned on writing them a check -- a blank check could have cost me a lot).

I'm The Newest Member Of The 'Steve Spurrier Hate Club'
For years I snickered when people told me that they hated Steve Spurrier. As a fan of the University of Florida (as well as an alumnus) I knew that they hated him because he helped produce a winning team.

After Florida's loss to South Carolina (Spurrier's current employer) I too now hate Steve Spurrier.

Weight, Weight, Don't Tell Me
I didn't think that I could possibly be getting fatter, but I believe that I am. Rats! That is such a horrible realization to have this close to the holidays.

Packing Heat
Hmm, it looks like that Brett Favre feller still has some game in him. Along with pushing the New York Jets one game closer to the first pick of next year's draft, the Green Bay Packers somehow managed to come to Atlanta and beat the Falcons (a feat not accomplished by the aforementioned Jets).

I was jealous of the Packer Nation turnout. I had assumed that I would have the same number of brethren for the Jets game. I was wrong. I decided to hang with my hashing Packer friends and bought in on an expensive ticket/tailgating deal. If you get this opportunity, don't bother. Oh, my friends were great, but the the "Falcon Experience"? Notsomuch. For my $140 I received a $60 ticket (which is in a section no better than my $35 season ticket), two drink tickets ($12 value), and food (hard to determine the value, but I will assume that it wasn't worth $68).

Yesterday's *cough* half-time show *cough* will go down in history as the Worst Half-Time Show EVER. The half-time show consisted of a fifteen minute long commericial for King Kong in the form of the "World's Largest Lottery Ticket." Fifteen people picking numbers from a hat, standing on the jumbo scratch off ticket, and then revealing their number to see which one of them won a trip to New York for the premier of King Kong. BORING!!!!

Do You Wahoo?
I finally got around to eating at Wahoo on Sunday morning. For those of you planning a Sunday breakfast, be forewarned that they open at 11am. We found this out when we arrived at 10am. To their credit, they opened the doors a little early to let us come in a sit inside (sometimes it helps having a woman very close to giving birth in your party).

Knowing that I was going to be getting food at the Falcons game I passed on the $15 buffet, and ordered the poached eggs with steak. While the eggs had been cooked a wee little bit too long, (almost to a soft-boiled state), the steak and hollandaise sauce were delicious. Our waitron Lindsay couldn't have been nicer, nor more attentive. Good service is always welcome when I go out to eat.

Every Day Is An Opening Day

High Dee High Dee High Dee Ho
Ok Atlanta, it's time to give credit where credit is due.

Last night my friend Stacey and I went to one of the High Museum's Pre-Opening openings. Fantastic!

First, the Wyeth exhibit is worth the price of admission. Rarely do I see a collection of artwork that floors me, especially when it is from the same artist (btw- did you know that Andrew Wyeth is still alive?). It is an impressive display. I'll even recommend getting the audio tour player because for a few of the paintings it adds a lot of insight (some are lame as well I must caution you).

Second, the new archictectural layout of the High is great. There is enough room to move about, they have a good area in which to hold Friday Jazz nights, and once the hype of the new restaurant Table 1280 dies down I am sure to be seen there for dinner.

I can only hope that the Georgia Aquarium is as impressive.

Who's Pimpin' Who?
A funny thing happened on the way to the museum, Stacey and I walked through some Brand Atlanta party. Had we been dressed up a little more we would have tried to crash the party. Eventhough we didn't get that opportunity to party we were handed Brand Atlanta schwag bags on the way out of Woodruff. I may have knocked their logo and anthem (and will not change my attitude toward either), but I am not above wearing a free t-shirt or baseball cap.

Why I Love Fall. Why Can't I Take Better Pictures?
Here are two pictures I've taken lately.

This picture was taken last Saturday in "Sloppy" Floyd State Park in Summerville.

This picture was taken this morning on my walk from the Dunwoody Marta station to my office. I am completely confused why the bottom half is so dark. Argh! Note to self: learn some photo editing software soon!

Invasion Of The Cheeseheads
The Green Bay Packers come knocking on our door this weekend, and I couldn't be happier. Am I a Packers fan? No, not really, because I've confessed before that I am a Jets fan.

The reason I am happy is that with the Packers in town the Atlanta hash will be celebrating Cheddarhead style with hashing and bowling on Saturday. W00t! Hopefully there will also be some playing of music from the best polka band around, Brave Combo.

Sunday will be tailgating and football!

Twas The Day Before Veteran's Day

Sony Is A Royal Pain In The Ass
I really want to buy a Playstation Portable, but why should I reward a company that wilfully invades my computer with spyware? Recently Sony was found to be putting hidden software onto computers when some of their CDs were inserted into a Windows PCs. The Electronic Frontier Foundation had an article which describes the nightmare, along with a (partial) list of culprit Sony CDs.

Trey Anastasio, Shine (Columbia)
Celine Dion, On ne Change Pas (Epic)
Neil Diamond, 12 Songs (Columbia)
Our Lady Peace, Healthy in Paranoid Times (Columbia)
Chris Botti, To Love Again (Columbia)
Van Zant, Get Right with the Man (Columbia)
Switchfoot, Nothing is Sound (Columbia)
The Coral, The Invisible Invasion (Columbia)
Acceptance, Phantoms (Columbia)
Susie Suh, Susie Suh (Epic)
Amerie, Touch (Columbia)
Life of Agony, Broken Valley (Epic)
Horace Silver Quintet, Silver's Blue (Epic Legacy)
Gerry Mulligan, Jeru (Columbia Legacy)
Dexter Gordon, Manhattan Symphonie (Columbia Legacy)
The Bad Plus, Suspicious Activity (Columbia)
The Dead 60s, The Dead 60s (Epic)
Dion, The Essential Dion (Columbia Legacy)
Natasha Bedingfield, Unwritten (Epic)
Ricky Martin, Life (Columbia) (labeled as XCP, but, oddly, our disc had no protection)

Fuck! The only one on the list that I have purchased was The Dead 60s cd. It was a really good cd, but I don't think it was that good.

Marta, Stumbling Toward Ecstasy
Marta has the slogan "If you had taken Marta, you'd be there by now." I call bullshit! Yesterday's commute from work to George's Bar for my run took one hour, thirty five minutes! Twenty-five of those minutes were spent waiting for a southbound train to arrive at the Dunwoody Marta station.

My Growing Belly Has Killed My Drinking Legs
I cannot drink the way I used to at the end of a Wednesday night run. The constant reminder of stubborn belly fat (as one commercial put it) has made me conscious of my drinking habit. Even with a lovely pitcher of Sierra Nevada in front of me I only had two glasses of beer (oh and a burger and fries). I felt so much guilt that I went home early. The thought of attempting more exercise when I returned to the house was quickly banished by my sleepiness, so I watched a little telly and I was off to night-night land.

I'm Sure My Dentist Loves Me
Today is my semi-annual dental checkup. My teeth are bad, and in years past my attention to dental hygene detail was also bad. I pay (both literally and figuratively) for both of these these days. I am sure that something is not right with one of my old fillings and today's checkup will only confirm this and produce the need for another visit. Damn, more money out the window...

High Times
Tonight I'll be attending an opening gala for the High Museum. If you think about it, November is a big month for us in Atlanta. Not only will the expansion for the High open this month, but I think that the Georgia Aquarium is also scheduled to open.

For Those Of You Who Have Veteran's Day Off
Fugoff! I of course to not have the day off, so there will be a regularly scheduled blog entry tomorrow. I'm sure that Marta will give me something to bitch about.

I dare say that I would march in a Veteran's Day parade (like I did as a kid back in the old days) for the opportunity to take the day off from work.

Slightly Different Bent For Hump Day

Yesterday was a boring day in the life of Paulie. I went to work, had to work until 8pm, had an hour-plus commute on Marta because it was in non-peak hours, ate a stick of cheese and drank a Cheerwine for dinner while I watched the World Series of Poker. Living like a rock star, baby!

Do One Thing And Do It Well
The other day I found out about a cool Firefox Extension that follows this motto well; it's called Tab X. The one thing that "Tab X" does is add a Close button to each of the tabs in your Firefox screen. Brilliant!

I had to "unlearn" my technique of quickly bringing a tab to the forefront and pressing the close button to the far right, but I think that putting a close button on each tab is incredibly intuitive.

Commercial Confusion, Part 2
A while ago I blogged about that State Farm commercial, now I have questions about a McDonalds commercial.

In this commercial two employees, a guy and a girl are sitting at a table. The guy is distressed because some girl dumped him the night before. The girl seems pleased by this and tries to explain that girls are like McGriddles (yuck!). After eating his entire McGriddle she asks "What is your next move", to which he replies "Get another McGriddle?" She seemed flummoxed with his response and tries to explain using his coffee.

What is the point? What was he supposed to answer? Was she hitting on him? And if so, would she be pleased by his answer about the McGriddle (to get another)?

Seriously, every day I live it becomes abundantly clear that I don't understand women...

Here's A Great Way To Save $20
Avoid the Playstation 2 game World Poker Tour like it's the Avian Flu. Okay, perhaps that's a bit harsh. If you enjoy watching your computer opponents play without any logic and checking all the time, then I say that this game is for you. I bought it with the hopes that I could improve my game; I was wrong.

Here is the best thing about this game

Rollercoaster Of Feelings

Down
Up
Down
Up
That's how it seemed to go yesterday...

J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!
I know, they suck. However, I think I know two people who were especially sad with the outcome of Sunday's Chargers v. Jets game, and I am not talking about the score. With one more whack to his head long-time, undersized, blue-collar Jets receiver Wayne Chrebet suffered another concussion, this one is likely to end his career.

I am one of the people saddened at this turn of events. For those of you who saw me at the Jets v. Falcons Monday night game a few weeks ago know that I proudly wore my replica Chrebet Jets jersey to the game to show support for my team. The other (I will assume) was the young lady at Twains who showed her Jets support by wearing her Chrebet Jets jersey to the bar on Sunday.

I Object!
Actually, I didn't object at all. Yesterday was a fantastic day in the Courthouse on the square of Decatur for me. I sat in a large room with 300+ of my closest friends until around noon when the woman in charge said "The rest of you are dismissed and can go home." That's right, I never even made it to Round Two of juror selection. This may mean that my name can reappear on the list sooner, but maybe not. Who knows?

I only wish that I could have the same success when dealing with my dentist later this week. Sadly, I already know that I won't.

How To Spoil A Perfect Day
I knew I didn't want to run. However, I skipped Sunday, so I needed to run. The weather was perfect, so there was no reason not to run. So I attempted a run.

What a mistake.

One of the problems of living where I do is that there are few flat roads around me. Whether the elevation changes be gradual or steep, natural or artificially created, they are there and they make my running that much poorer. I think that I might also have to come to the realization that I will never run like I used to. Advancing age is probably the reason, but I cannot give up because once I do I might as well quit.

But There Can Be A Silver Lining
Completely dejected I returned home and decided to check email to see if there was any interest in going to see Pigeon John and Matisyahu at The Roxy last night.

While there was no email regarding the concert, there was one that lifted my spirits. It was from one of my long-time friends Suzanna with whom I have done a poor job of staying in touch and haven't seen in far too long.

Multipurpose Marta Doors
Holy shit, sharpen those things up and they would make great guillotines! This morning I tried to go to one car past the bottom of the stairwell and of course there were people crowding the doors while the middle of the car was wide open. When I got halfway into the car the doors shut, slamming into my right shoulder (the left 2/3rds of my body was already in the car). I had to literally kick the door with my right foot to get the doors to reopen.

Another Dismal CD Tuesday
Yikes! Here is the list of people/bands that are releasing CDs today
  • Bell Orchestre
  • Kate Bush
  • Kenny Chesney
  • Comet Gain
  • Neil Diamond
  • Menomena
Hey RIAA at least you don't have to worry about me stealing any of this crap, it's not worth the hassle for me.

Paulie, You Got Some 'Splainin To Do

Friday's weather was perfect, so perfect in fact that I spent one of my precious paid days off from work and played hookey.

I've Got Mail
Whilst killing time on Friday I received a great email. The email was from an author from Bloomberg who alerted me that she had used my quote about the new Atlanta Theme song in an article. Here is an excerpt...
The song has a chorus of ``I love the A-T-L, I love the A-
T-L,'' and declares: ``I love the A-T-L more than any other
place I've been around the world.''

The Atlanta-based blog site www.insidetheperimeter.com, run
by an Atlantan who goes by the name Paulie, chimed in with its
critique: ``A is for awful, T is for terrible and L is for lousy.''
Oh, I couldn't be more thrilled!

Tarrrghget
I like Target. As far as the Big Boxes go I find them to be pretty decent. However, on Friday they got me more than a bit pissed. A few months back I purchased an item which awarded me a $5 Target Gift card. Well, wouldn't you know, that when I tried to use it on Friday it didn't work. I explained to the cashiers that it should have $5 on it but I got a complete "nope, the system doesn't recognize it, you lose" speech. I should have told them to go fuck themselves and credit back everything that I had just purchased, but didn't. C'mon, if I was going to rip Target off, would I do it $5 at a time? I miss the days of hand-written gift cards.

One of the items in my cart was this.

Yes, it's Jones Soda's Limited Edition Holiday Pack for 2005, including the flavors Turkey & Gravy, Wild Herb Stuffing, Brussels Sprout, Cranberry and Pumpkin Pie. Yum!

Summerville In The Fall Is Still Summerlike
A friend of mine invited a bunch of people up to Summerville Georgia for a bonfire on Saturday night. It was so warm that a fire was unnecessary, but sitting around a fire drinking and eating is always welcome.

Before heading to his property I spent a little time relaxing in James H (Sloppy) Floyd State Park. For the most part it was quite peaceful, with the exception of one person who saw fit to drive through the park with their windows down blasting "Centerfold", yes the J. Geils Band's "Centerfold."

Oy, That's A Good Sandwich
Making it back to Atlanta too late to meet up with the Sunday running group I had to concentrate on one thing -- corned beef.

On the first Sunday of the month Twains in Decatur hosts the New York Corned Beef Society of Atlanta. Like a salivating dog I sat in Twains watching the Falcons game on tv while the people prepared the corned beef and pastrami. While I may not have been the best corned beed sandwich I've ever eaten, it was well worth the money and will have me returning in the future. Their next meeting will be December 5th, and as their sign said, "come and put some JEW in your holiday season." I concur.

Have Car Will Travel (Very Slowly)

Why Do You People Commute This Way?
Oh my God traffic in this town bites! I had to drive to work yesterday because of a mid-morning doctor's appointment. It's hard enough to find a doctor that accepts my insurance, nevermind finding one that's near a Marta line. The commute home (or as near as home as I was heading) was excruciating. It could drive someone to drink.

Who Are The Chattooga County All Stars?
Why they are the trivia team I played with last night (I am such a trivia whore). The All Stars are my friend Bill's team, who were gathered at Raging Burrito last night. Need I tell you that we kicked ass? No, I didn't think I had to.

I Want Free Parking!

I pay enough to drive my car, why should I have to pay to park it as well?

Yesterday I had to pay to park at the doctor's office. Look, I'm shelling out $25 for a co-pay, I'll never know how much you'll make for the ten minutes that it took to examine me, why won't you validate my parking? This is ridiculous.

And then there is Decatur. I don't think that I have ever found a space in Decatur's two small metered lots. Every time I drive to Decatur I feel as if there should be ample (free) street parking, but there never is. I should have Marta'd to Decatur, but chose not to.

The Mall Is No Place For A Lonely Soul
While eating the most dismal Chinese food to ever pass my lips I realized that I should not hang out in malls. For me it's like fishing in a pond where you can see the fish you want to catch just swimming around your hook, but they never seem to bite. It could drive someone to drink.

Has Anyone Ever Gotten Off TicketBastard's Email List?
Over the years I have purchased tickets from them using three different email accounts. No matter how many times I "opt-out" from their email list, I still get their crap. Fuckers.

And There Is Still More Driving In My Future
My weekend is already packed solid. It's packed so solid that I've convinced myself to take the day off from work today.

Saturday night I'll be up near Summerville Georgia hanging with some friends. It should be a good time since the weather will be gorgeous and hopefully some of the color-changing leaves will be present. Do I have to tell you that drinking will be involved? No, I didn't think I had to.

I plan to get back to Atlanta in time for a good long run Sunday morning followed by football watching and CORNED BEEF eating. Yes, I will finally be attending the New York Corned Beed Society of Atlanta meetup at Twain's in Decatur. Yippee!!!!

Oh, And If You Don't Hear From Me On Monday...
It's either because
  1. I've electricuted myself replacing a light socket
  2. I've burned the house down by mis-wiring the light socket
  3. I've been selected for a jury (I'll be Marta'ing to Decatur)
  4. I've been driven to drink

Thinking Big

Here's A Tip For You Business Majors
If you are going to open a restaurant in an area that is densely populated with office buildings, open the fucking thing for lunch!

I am talking to you Outback Steakhouse. I am not even a big fan of yours, but if you opened at noon instead of 3pm you would have had a customer the other day. I'm just sayin'. Oh, and all those potential customers in cars around 5pm, they are trying to get home, not to your restaurant.

Tybee, A No Go For Moi
I had entertained thoughts of running next year's Tybee Island Half Marathon. Those thoughts were quickly nixed when I realized that they have once again scheduled their race for the same weekend as the Super Bowl. C'mon folks, the Super Bowl date is published well in advance, couldn't you find another weekend?

What Do You Mean That There's A New Ratchet Game In Stores?
I've bought and finished "Ratchet and Clank", "Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando" and "Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal", you would think that I would have gotten the memo about the new release of "Ratchet: Deadlocked." C'mon Insomniac Games, inform your public! Even in this financially stressful month I think that I can scrape together fifty for one of your games.

Hey Williams Street, Video To The iPod?
I surmise that on average every Atlantan knows 2.7 people who work for Turner. Since I am not one of them (their interactive division turned me down in 1996, but I'm not bitter), I'll have to throw this suggestion out from afar.

You know what scales well to smaller screens and doesn't require high bitrates for quality video? Cartoons. The last time I checked, Turner had a whole network of them things stored up in a division called Cartoon Network (those clever rapscallions).

I know, it must be a real hassle dealing with Apple, but if ABC (who is owned by Disney) can do it, I think you can too.

Perhaps I Could Call It My arrghPod?
This must be meant for the "dress your pet in costume crowd." Yesterday I stumbled upon a website that sells costumes for your iPod! I shit you not, they can be found at iAttire. Here is a sample of their work

(note, this image is from their website; it is not a photo of my iPod)

It's Not What You Were Thinking

If you read too much into my mood yesterday then you think that I've finally met a woman. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that's not it.

Here's One Possible Reason
The Jackmobile will soon be all mine! WooHoo, I (think that I have) paid off my car loan, and I have done it seven months early! I decided rather than spend any "disposable" income on a new toy right now, I thought I should pay off one of my debts. My doubt lies in the math that Honda Finance's website made me do in order to properly enter my payoff amount. I do know that had I done the transaction on 10/31 instead of 11/1 I would have saved $5 (which would have bought a pitcher of High Life at George's tonight).

Ooh, and I should have remembered that my car insurance is also due this month. Hmmm, maybe I should be called Poor Paulie for a while...

Maybe It Should Be Called Slowgle?
Man, is it just me or has Google and all of its offerings (maps, gmail, etc) been dog slow the last few days. I realize that my internet connection is not ideal, but other sites don't seem to be exhibiting the same slowdown.

On The Radio, Wah Oh, On The Radio
The only Atlanta radio station that I can stomach these days is WRAS (aka "Album 88"). Album 88 is the student-run station for Georgia State University. Listening to WRAS can be interesting because you never really know what you are going to hear. At the same time listening can be annoying if the DJ is either really inexperienced or has the annoying habit of reading a bio for every band or includes the track number whose song was played in the last set. Ah college radio, you get what you pay for.

It Drives Me Crazy
Well, I guess I should have followed my intuition and Marta'd around last night. My revised plan was to get something to eat (which reminds me -- I either need an eating partner, or suggestions for new restaurants) and head toward The Loft for the Shout Out Louds! show. However, Midtown traffic was fucking insane! Peachtree, jammed. Piedmont, jammed. Juniper, jammed because of roadwork. I got so fed up that I wound up driving toward Buckhead to eat. After dinner I gave one last thought about going to the show, and then after getting caught in more bad traffic on The Connectore, I went to Target before heading home. I guess I'll have to check out The Loft some other time...

The ironic thing about yesterday's horrid auto commute was that I had perhaps the most peaceful ride to work on Marta yesterday. It was the first time that I sat on the train, completely relaxed. Huh, I guess 11/01 was a Yin-Yang day of commuting for me.

Or Perhaps I Should Have Walked
A few months ago my friend Sarah tipped me off to a great website which is now called GMap Pedometer. For some reason I have never blogged about this site. With my return to *cough* running *cough* I have found this to be an invaluable resource for planning out running courses. The only thing this site is missing is some sort of elevation change indicator so that I can avoid running up as many hills as I did on Monday.

Ten Down, Two To Go

November 1st? You've got to be kidding!

More Trivia In My Belly
Last night Meet The Hashers met up for a Halloween version of trivia at Johnny's Pizza in Inman Park. The best part of the evening was a new and very attractive waitress dressed up in a Catholic school girl outfit. Something told me that this was not the first time she has worn that outfit.

All of the questions (save one) had a Halloween theme. I am really not a fan of these gimmicks because it narrows the answer field and teams who would normally be out of contention can make educated guesses. You can probably tell from my tone that we didn't win. :) Second place was all ours, however.

Ask For Me By Name! Accept No Substitutions!
You'll probably have to know that my hash name is Wee Little Bit to understand this...

I wasn't planning on ever running the Flying Pig Marathon, but when they ask for me by name I might have to reconsider.

Major Crisis In The Works
My beloved 32" television is starting to die. Not yet six years old, the big monster is exhibiting scan lines (where you can see the tube refresh) that cannot be fixed nor can they increasingly be ignored.

You'd think that with the popularity of HD tvs that good old school analog tvs would have dropped in price. But, I guess in the same way that it costs a lot to buy a turntable (you remember those, right?) non-digital tv sets cost the same as they did when I bought this one. Bummer! It's not that I don't want a fancy new tv, but I really don't want to buy one now, and the bread racking that I currently use doesn't allow for a 16:9 aspect ratio (aka widescreen) tv. Arrgh! Besides, I've got other gadgets and gizmos that I'd rather spring for right now.

Music For The Massive
My live show listing is running a bit bare right now, but tonight I'll be attending one of them. I suggest that you come out to The Loft to see Shout Out Louds!.This will be my first trip to The Loft, so I am interested to see how this venue plays. Also, I am going to attempt to flex my new Marta card by taking the train, although this could be a big mistake for the return trip. Tune in tomorrow and find out.

At Least CDs Are Still Fairly Affordable
Slow release day. I guess we are to the point where labels will be waiting to slam the holiday season. Of the releases, two intrigue me.

First is the Sun Kil Moon release called "Tiny Cities" which is a cd of Modest Mouse covers. I've been getting into covers a lot lately thanks to the Coverville podcast.

Second is a four-disc compilation of Guided By Voices music called "Suitcase 2: American Superdream Wow". Guided By Voices called it quits this year, but if you missed out on their career you can catch up in one fell ($45) swoop.
